CCTV Video Surveillance and Traffic monitoring in Rome

Description

Since the year 2000 a system for video surveillance and traffic monitoring with colour cameras with PTZ has been designed and implemented in Rome. The system use a private fiber optic network and in year 2013 the system was subject to extension and conversion from analog to digital. Now the cameras are 76, located near large church (Basilica) , highly critical intersections and along two road axes.

Objectives of the project

The objective of the system was to give to operators working in Rome Mobility Agency control room and to Urban Police operating in thei control room the possibility of remote monitoring a certain numbers of traffic intersections in order to increase the quality and the number of information about traffic with witch increase the infomobility platform and the Urban Police services.

The system aimed at traffic monitoring today also plays an important role from the point of view of security and Urban Police in year 2015 has started recording video streams.

Results/Lessons Learnt

In year 2000 was activated the first set of 45 colour analog cameras with PTZ: the video and data signals were transmitted to the Mobility Center and to Urban Police control room through a proprietary fiber optic network, whose major backbones were installed in underground tunnels. The cameras were located near large church (Basilica) and in highly critical intersections.

In year 2012-2013 the system was extended and modernized: all the fiber optic network became a WAN and all the cameras have been replaced with new Dome IP cameras, the fiber optic network has been extended and also 30 new cameras has been installed in critical intersections and along two road axes. The video server  in Mobility Center distributes video streams to two client and to 4x3 videowall both in Mobility Center and in Urban Police Control room.  Urban Police also record video streams for security-related needs.

A further extension of the system is currently under design and should be deploied  in year 2018

Success story description

Both Mobility Center operators and Urban Police members benefit from using the system beause can detect abnormal traffic situations or  can receive confirmation for events detected by other sources.
