Description

In Rome municipality area there are more than 1350 traffic light intersection. Since the year 2000 different systems has been designed and today Rome has about 530 traffic light intersection managed by six different UTC system based on traffic plan selection algorithms

Results/Lessons Learnt

There are various types of traffic lights systems. Classification can be made based on: FIXED TIMES: Provides a fixed life time of green and red, independent of time of day, number of vehicles and type of day (weekdays or holidays) Actuators: The system implemented regulates the time of green depending on the intensity of the traffic, through the presence of sensors detecting the passage of the vehicles. In the pedestrianized installation, the call buttons allow you to activate the green for crossing. Centralized: Each single traffic light is the "node" of a network of multiple systems and its regulation is correlated with that of the other intersections of the same area in order to maintain a good coordination (algorithmic optimization). The determination of green and red times is done by means of a computer that analyzes the network traffic conditions by identifying the queue conditions and deciding both the optimum duration of the times of the individual plants and the time lag between plant timing Different for coordinated itineraries. In Rome more than 500 systems are centralized and use optimization algorithms of the single intersection and the entire itinerary. Installed along the main arteries of urban access, on two tram routes and in some particularly critical areas. Complex systems can implement control strategies for dynamic and static traffic light on the real traffic conditions - control, plane characteristics (timing, Cycle time and green times) are determined in a completely automatic way based on traffic measure (flow, occupancy). Contiguous systems exchange information and interact. The control parameters are the weights of the cost function. The relationship between the parameters and the effects and their propagation is neither explicit nor intuitive. The communication network is most urgent because of the greater number of information that is exchanged between adjacent plants and between a plant and the center
