Parking application for ITS Platform North Denmark

As part of ITS Platform North Denmark, a full-automatic GNSS-based parking payment (PP) system was developed (PP app). On the basis of the parking position and parking time, the PP app can determine the price of parking and collect the amount from the car owner’s bank account. The driver is informed about any initiation of PP via SMS message. If the driver finds the payment erroneous, it can be cancelled via SMS message. Parking attendants can check if the car in question has an ongoing payment for parking. To handle the problems with GNSS-based positioning in densely built-up areas, an advanced map matching algorithm was integrated in the PP app. 24 of the participating vehicles used the PP app, and 58 parking payments were carried out without errors. In a few cases, the wrong parking area was selected. This was due to lack of information in the map rather than errors in the map matching algorithm.

Success story description

A significant effort was made in the ITS Platform North Denmark project to develop a full-automatic parking payment (PP) system based on GNSS. Although the test period was shorter and included significantly fewer parkings than expected, the results indicate that it was successful. The first and most critical evaluation, namely the feedback from the drivers using the PP, has shown that the PP app works. The right price per hour was selected, and, not least, no money was collected outside the period with parking restrictions. In the couple of cases where the PP app selected an incorrect PP (and was stopped by an SMS message from the driver), it was because the chosen parking area was not implemented in the system and not due to an error in the PP app. Of course these results should be seen as uncertain as only 58 payments were carried out as part of the PP app. Significantly more parkings would have made any additional errors known. However, it has to be remembered that pre-tests were carried out before the launch of the PP app, and many of these potential errors were registered and dealt with at that time. Therefore, the overall experiences are that, on the basis of the results found, a well-working PP app has been made. On the other hand, if it were to be used on a larger scale or for a longer period, more tests should be made so as to ensure that it works well enough and that any unforeseen errors could be met before a large-scale implementation of the PP app. Related cases:
