VMS on Rural Roads

Niels Agerholm / 14 Jul 2016 17:26

In 2012 a VMS system was established in the intersection Løkkensvej/Vråvej in North Denmark. It was established to improve road safety and because speed was high on the arterial road (Løkkensvej).

Objectives of the project

It was establish to handle partly the local and regional traffic, which includes significant shares of heavy traffic, but also the high volume holiday traffic on this route.

Challenges addressed
  • Traffic management & control

Results/Lessons Learnt

On 23/11/2012, a variable speed limit (VMS) system was put into operation at the junction Løkkensvej / Vråvej on highway 451. A year later carried out a comprehensive impact assessment of the system based on approximately 2500000 speed records of drivers through the intersection. Effect Evaluation of the system shows that there has been a statistically significant reduction of the speed of Løkkensvej (main road) after the establishment of the VMS system - also in the long term. In addition, the proportion of road users on Løkkensvej exceeding the maximum speed limit of 80 km / h, reduced by 10-15% after the establishment of the VMS system.

Success story description

An evaluation of 2.5 million speed registrations showed among other a significantly reduced speed on the main road (Løkkensvej) due to the VMS system – and the effect was lasting. The Share of speeding vehicles was reduced by 10-15%. No Further analyses were carried out regarding the traffic safety effect.

Technology readiness level
  • TRL 9 - Actual system proven in operational environment (competitive manufacturing in the case of key enabling technologies; or in space)
